Who we are

The LAC Commission on HIV/AIDS is an organization of concerned and committed leaders uniting for HIV/AIDS awareness, education and ministry. In October of 2003 the idea of a Commission on AIDS was presented to regional leaders of the Assemblies of God World Missions. By January 2004 a number of interested missionaries were called together in Mexico City to discuss the need, purpose and scope of such a Commission.

Why the Commission was started

Over 2 million HIV infections and 120,000 AIDS deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean demands a response on the part of 120,000 plus Assemblies of God churches in our region. An estimated 329 people a day die with AIDS, most without comfort or a Christian witness, desperate people suffering without hope. The thrust of this program is to challenge and train in partnership with National Churches and organizations to develop a needed response, resulting in lives saved and providing a compassionate touch for those affected. Studies indicate that trends can be reversed with aggressive, culturally sensitive education programs, as in the case of Uganda . This focus will expand existing programs and open new initiatives to combat the problem of HIV/AIDS.

Compassionate Ministry

It is our aim to keep a face on this problem. People affected by AIDS are hurting marginalized people who need a compassionate response from the Church. These are people created in the image of God. They must be treated with Christian grace in the same manner that the Church reaches out to other hurting people with desperate problems.

People that are suffering and terminally ill are open to the Gospel message. They are primed for eternity and must receive a clear witness to the truth of God’s love before they enter eternity. Family members of the dying are also responsive to the loving touch of those representing the Savior during their time of difficulty. We must see these people as persons for whom Christ died and has compassion, even as he had compassion on the leper. (Mark 1:40-42)

Fiscal Responsibility
